This place was recommended by our hotel and had great reviews on Yelp. It is easy to understand why... Our server was friendly, available, and very easy going, despite how busy it was. The appetizer of pretzel bread and biscuit was delicious with the butter and pepper jelly given. Unique and yummy. Hubby had the huge wedge salad first with the real bacon bits, corn, and their homemade grilled onion Gorgonzola dressing. Ridiculously yummy! I had the grilled avocado which was also different and served with another tasty sauce. Hubs finished the whole pound of crab legs, delicious and fresh. I had grilled lobster with garlic herb butter - heaven!! All the sides are homemade except for the sweet potato fries per our server. The sweet potato soufflé was a different offering with lobster, and I'm so glad I ordered it:) Our son had the fish fingers or sticks and I was really impressed. Real chunks of fresh fish battered and fried... I had some! This came with really good fries too which we're obviously not frozen but kitchen made in the back. Overall, exceptional experience! Wish I could comment on key lime pie but I was too stuffed!!

Not a place to go on a Sunday night. They were fairly busy with hardly any staff. When the waitress was being told she had another party (us) she shook her head and walked off....ended up leaving and going to Denny's just a block down and had an amazing server who made up for it.

My last time leaving the lower keys i saw a few cops parked here and thought to myself, if local cops eat here, it has to be worth coming back. So i promised myself i will go next time im down. I looked online and saw they offered my favorite dish from New Orleans Char-boiled Oysters. 100% it was time to go Ballyhoo's, I ordered of course the Oysters which were great but nothing compared to the new orleans ones. I ordered the All you can eat snow crabs. the first batch was good and quick. The second batch was by far the BEST order of crab legs ive ever had. But it was isolated to that batch of mine. all the other stuff was ok. THE JALAPENO muffins were incredible. I over stuffed my face with the snow crab so didint get to really enjoy the Key Lime pie (i usually am a fan of KLP) but i did taste it and it was awesome, i recommend splitting the sides as they are hearty portions. I will be going here again soon.

My and my husband's most favorite place to eat in Key Largo! LOVE the food and service!

The staff is so friendly (shout out to Tanya & Chastity!). This place looks very unassuming, but don't let it fool you. This kitchen is run by a Chef not a cook. The seafood is Really Good, (though no all-you-can-eat stone crab available when we went). I fell in love with the yellowtail snapper and there's an awesome salad called Joe vs. the Volcano that is a meal in itself, but the Key Lime Pie is the BEST!!! To Die For!!! My husband's response after one bite? "I want more pie and I want it now!" 3 nights in a row, our go to choice.

We actually stopped by on our way out of the keys, and were hoping to grab some appetizers and have a few beers. After reading their unusual menu, we couldn't really find any appetizers that caught our attention. We were expecting the usual fried calamaris or conch, but they weren't in the menu. We did drink our beers and ordered some key lime pie, which I must say, must be the best key lime pie I've ever had.

so...if you cannot understand the menu and how pricing works, ask...Ivan explained it very clearly...she had the snow crap, and I did the combination crab all you can eat...the stone crab was tasty, but way to much work...the king crab was just that...KING! very tasty sides also...mac and cheese, spinach and black eye peas...would not be a solid review without some kind of criticism, so I will add that the parking situation is awful...this is a great at place to eat...

During our stay in the marina nearby awaiting our crossing to the Bahamas, we found Ballyhoo's and are we glad we did. The food was fabulous, parmesan crusted snapper with black beans and rice, prime rib with fresh green beans on our first night. The cast iron Mahi Mahi the second night, all were cooked to perfection, the creole sauce on the Mahi is to die for! I did not try the key lime pie but opted for the key lime cake, which is just as good. But the best so far was the carrot cake, 6 layers! Ivan was our waiter both nights, he did a great job! If they are out of stone crab, do not leave, try something else, you will not be disappointed! Great fresh pretzel breadsticks and mini biscuits, with tasty jellies, but they are addicting, so pace yourself! We even bought a jar of the jalapeno jelly! We will return without a doubt!!!

Crab legs, Crab legs..... yum! If you are in the mood for crab legs, Ballyhoo's is for you. The crab legs were so amazing and fresh. We payed $10.99 for a pound of steamed crab legs. Great price and great taste. We washed them down with some Key West Summer Ale. For starters, the seafood bisque and clam chowder were delish. Place is awesome. Definitely a must go to in Key Largo. Can't wait to return!

2.5 round up to 3 stars. Everything you put on your menu should be worth repeating. If you don't do it well, don't serve it. The ambiance- Eating outside on the garden enclosed patio, while the sun sets, with the strings of lights overhead, tiki torches burning and light breeze blowing was very nice. But it was the nicest thing about this place. Food- Good- The jalpeno corn muffins were good. Not actually hot, just a hint of spice. My Parmesean yellowtail was nice. But the sauce, while good, overpowered the fish. The fried dolphin sandwich was neither bad nor bad ass. Bad- The hamburger was a burnt turd on a bun. Served very plainly too. The Captain's plate (I can't remember if that is it's real name, but think a little of everything on a plate) was ehh. Not enough lobster and the shrimp was tough. Conclusion: I think it really depends on what you order. Not a bad experience, but probably not a do over either.

This place is a hit and miss kind of spot. Last couple of times have been misses. EAT OUTSIDE! Inside can feel a little cramped, the outside seating is a nice garden/ patio, very pretty if it isn't too hot. I ordered the hamburger, I know a burger in the keys at a seafood place, but I had a bad day and felt like meat. Didn't know that it could get worse. The burger was burnt beyond belief. If you aren't gonna do it right, don't offer it. My sister's parmesean yellowtail was nice, the dolphin sandwich was good enough, and the jalapeno corn muffins were very nice. Stick with the fish and you should be fine, and if you are lucky and it's one of those days that they are on, you are in for a very enjoyable meal.

All you can eat snow crab was great. The price was right. The service was fantastic, thank you Kayla. The 3 other dinner choices were okay, just nothing to write home about.

NOTE: THE MAP ON YELP IS INCORRECT!!! THIS PLACE IS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF US1 ON MM 97.8 IF YOU ARE HEADING SOUTHBOUND!!! If you are a lover of Stone Crabs then this is the place for you. Ballyhoo's offers all you can eat Stone Crab throughout the Stone Crab season. The price varies as it is market dependent (about $40) but these are about as fresh a s you can get. You also get a salad (love the peppercorn ranch dressing) and a choice of a side (black beans and wild rice for me). I tend not to eat too much of the side and salad as I just want to stuff my face with crabs!!! Besides stone crabs I have also had the Mahi-Mahi prepared in their Hemingway style. It consists of a lightly breaded Mahi-Mahi fillet, lightly breaded in a lemon picatta sauce and then topped with a generous portion of crab meat. If you enjoy lemony things this is a dish for you. I am a lemon monster so this is one of my favorite dishes here. Oh, don't forget the key lime pie, it rocks!!!

Researched to find best rated as we were going to be in Key Largo...I found this place. We were going to be in the area for 4 days so I figured I would seal the trip with a nice lobster dish, thinking the lobster must be big and delicious since we are in the Keys...well, I was disappointed. The lobster tail was one of the smallest I have had ever. I have had bigger tails at Red Lobster in Miami. The one thing about the dish that was awesome was the key lime butter sauce for the lobster which I barely got to savor since there was barely any lobster. I also was disappointed in the pretzel bread...way salty. The fresh limade was also just super sour and everyone at the table was loading it up with sugar to be able to gulp it down. I give it 3 stars because at least the server was polite, friendly and the place seemed clean. I do not think I would return for lobster - maybe to eat crab.

Best scallops I ever had. The place is less casual than your typical hole in the wall restaurant in the keys but still casual enough. Cozy old farm house turned into a restaurant with string lights and tiki torches. Nice civilized crowd including quite a few locals. Great service even though the place was packed on a Saturday night. Did I mention the scallops? Soft, buttery and cooked perfectly to melt in your mouth. We're used to South Beach prices so getting a 10 oz sirloin with 5 shrimp, a generous side and a salad for $25 made me fell like Christmas. The steak was grilled and seasoned perfectly, the shrimp a little overcooked. They will substitute any of the starchy sides for brown rice or steamed veggies, a welcome change form the usual fried foods found nearby. We ordered the chocolate peanut pie for dessert against our waiter's recommendation (creme brulee) and were a tad disappointed. Not the best dessert I ever had so maybe next time we'll listen to our waiter.

Great place. Definitely a cut above the others we tried in Key Largo, they have healthy and vegan fare on the menu, like sweet potato burger and great salads. Fresh fish and fried tomato sandwich was awesome. Fries are hand cut. So much better than another popular spot, we came back for a second night.

This place was good except for who I believe to be the manager since she kept ordering people around and seemed to not be able to answer a simple question like 'what are your specials'...she would instead say hold on, the server will be right with you. THe ONE server that was on hand was running back and forth between the kitchen, bar, and outside seating. She did a great job but had the unprofessional manager (or whoever she was) answered simple questions or helped, it would have been a lot better. To me, it was unprofessional and she seemed bothered whenever anyone asked her anything. She was not friendly and for that reason, I'm not sure I'd return there. The waitress/bar tender was very friendly though and knowledgeable. The food was good but a bit high priced. Then again, you are on an island so that is expected. Overall good, the manager just rubbed me the wrong way...

Awesome food and great service. The sweet potato burger is unique and tasted great. My wife enjoyed their fish sandwich. They even make their own condiments. Not the typical Keys restaurant, this place has a real chef who makes great fresh and unique food.

"Harvey's Fish Sandwich" is so tasty (and very messy!) but worth the drive alone. Your choice of grilled or fried fresh fish (snapper or mahi usually) and they serve it on toasted bread with tomato slices and cheese. SO good! They also do ALL U CAN EAT STONECRABS! Call ahead to be sure they have them that day. It's like $44 and it comes with your choice of sides and salad. Service is generally good but I have definitely had my share of slow service, day and night. In the cooler months, it's nice to sit outside under the tiki torches, by the side of the road. It's on the left side of US1 heading south, right across from Kon TIki Resort.

After an hour drive to get to the restaurant and having reservations for 7pm (party of 8) we did not get seated till 7:45pm and at a much smaller table. Staff was very apologetic and tried to accommodate. 15 min later, we were moved to a bigger table. The place is small, a few tables outside and tight inside. we ordered the all-u-can eat snow crab legs ($35 pp) which comes with one side ( also unlimited). Crab legs were good but for the price and side options I would rather drive a little further south and eat at Whale Harbor. Staff was great, very attentive. Maybe I'll come to try something else from the menu.

Excellent food and extremely friendly wait staff. Tried a variety of dishes and all were top notch. Best restaurant we sampled while in the Keys.

Key Lime pie with meringue, I have to agree with Nick D. It is the best key lime pie I've had. Waitress that night was concern about the mosquitoes eating us outside and that was nice. When we sat down to order, I felt like everything I was trying to order were tried to be all upgraded. From raw oyster which is $12 to grilled which is $16 something. I don't mind paying a little extra if I'm told I'll like it. I thought it wasn't a genuine suggestion for my oyster when the waitress never really followed up how was the grilled one instead of raw. But could say it's better than steamed. Maybe I'll try the eat all you can crab next time.

Meatloaf Tuesday! Great comfort food and everything was fresh...from the green beans to the mashed potatoes that still had a bit of skin peeking through. Nothing out of a can, that's for sure. And the cornbread muffins were excellent, too. No dinner for me tonight!

I've heard a lot about Ballyhoo's, all good things and it lives up to its reputation amount Key Largo regulars. The seafood bisque was very good and the counch chowder is the beat I've had in a long while. We both had po boys, mine was fried oyster and she had the roast beef which was amazing. Service was the best I've had in Key Largo yet. Try it you'll like it.

Very tasty and lots of homemade treats. I has the conch chowder and it was manhattan style with lots of veggies but didn't notice much meat. The breads ESP jalapeño corn bread was fantastic try the jalapeño jam on it. It's home made too. Only disappointment was there were no stone crabs. Apparently they are on short supply right now

Loved every dish I tired here. Great atmosphere and great food. Everything is made from scratch. I especially liked the stuffed mushroom! If you are debating whether to go here or to a place by the water choose this place. The food is a hundred times better at Ballyhoo. Try the key lime pie. It is really yummy.

I went with my family last week and we enjoyed our meal. The service was excellent. The portions were above average but the quality of food was consistent from start to finish. The salads were fresh and tasty. My wife and I enjoyed our Yellow Fish blackened and Italian style.

We went in at 7.30 with a group of 8, the service was fantastic and the food was even better, The crab stuffing on the captains platter was delicious, the stone crab was perfect, even the hamburger one of our party ordered, she said was one of the best burgers she had, had anywhere. Then dessert arrived, there a lot of claims around here about having the best Key lime pie...... Well I think we found it!! Compared to many places around Key Largo we thought the prices were excellent, about 40 per head including several drinks. We will definitely be back!

This used to be our favorite restaurent in the Keys. What happened!!! The menu was completely redone. Not a lot a fish dishes or vareity. No more salads with dinner. Still very expensive. I order a steak medium, it came well done. They didn't have baked potatos! I like a baked potato with my steak! No more creme brulee. The staff was pleasant enough. They must have fired the guy that swore at the customers the last time we were there. Time to fine another favorite.

Meh! Not as good as two yr ago. My salad with a "few" noodles had about 2 cups of pasta and a half cup of greens ( called "Joe meets the Volcano"). Tasty, but I thought I was getting a salad with a few noodles, not the other way around. Parmesan Flounder was just ok, not great.

My friend and I were staying at a hotel across the street and decided to give this place a try. We started off with a plate of conch fritters which were crispy and delicious. Then we shared a hefty slice of key lime pie. The pie was very good by my standards, lots of sweet airy meringue and the pie was the right coloration (if you ever have lime green key lime pie, you're not having it authentic style). Our server was accommodating and friendly. A bit on the expensive side, and if was rolling in the dough and tried more of their crab/fish dishes, they would've been worth it.

My experience was one hit and one miss. We ate here our first night in Key Largo, a Sunday. The place was dead. The staff was attentive and friendly. We had fried alligator bites as an appetizer (not on the menu, but really tasty with a nice sauce). I had shrimp and tomatoes which was delicious. We left feeling very satisfied and knew we wanted to return before our trip was over. Our last night in Key Largo, a Saturday, we thought we'd end our trip at Ballyhoo's. We arrived about 7:30, and the place was busy. We'd been in the Keys a week, and I figured I'd better try conch before I left. There was no conch fritter on the menu, so I ordered conch meunière. I didn't like it, but I've never had conch before. We ordered our main meals and waited. And waited. After about an hour, our server finally explained that one of our dishes had mistakenly been given to another table, so it might be another 10 minutes. She told us we would get free dessert (we don't usually eat dessert). After another 10 minutes or so, I decided I just wasn't really all that hungry anymore. We had an early day the next day, and I was getting tired. We tried to flag someone down to tell them just to forget it, but we didn't manage to get anyone's attention before the food finally arrived. The server offered to box it up (no, thanks, it's our last night, it would be wasted) again offered free dessert (no, thanks, we just want to eat out of here). We got a half-baked apology and our bill. $30 for drinks and a chewy conch appetizer. I was supremely disappointed, not only because we had previously had a positive experience, but mostly because we had wanted to end our vacation with a great meal. That didn't happen.

Enjoyed everything here, had the grilled cheese and tomatoe soup. Ate evey crumb and about licked the bowl, wasn't expecting it to be so good. Daughter had the burger which was large and delicious, she tried her best but couldn't finish it as she was stuffed. Fries were the only thing that we had that were ok not great.

Waited 10 min for someone to come our table. Another 10min to come back with our water. 15 min after that the server came & said it wasn't her table but take our orders. We asked how much longer it would be since our wait was long. The Server replied, "don't worry Honey, I know what I'm doing". Needless to say service was horrible.. Everything took over 2 hrs, for lunch. We had the Captain's Platter & grilled Mahi sandwich. Food was great, the seafood was very fresh. if you don't mind the long wait or crappy service, the food was good.

This place was Ok, but nothing special. It was close the place we were staying at in Key Largo and was recomended. The food was good but not great. We were told to stick to the basics here, but we ordered a fancy special and it was not what I was expecting. I would like to try this place again and give it another chance, but we were not able to on this trip.

So we heard about the all-you-can-eat-stone-crab for $42 a person...we decided to give it a shot and make it worth it..and we sure did! Nice little restaurant with a full bar and two flat screen tvs. Indoor and outdoor seating...seemed to short on waiters/waitresses that night, but it was a weeknight. The place filled up quick after 7:00pm. Pretty extensive menu. We got the bartender who had to act waiter to us and those seated outside...we had to wait at times. Dinner for two: Stone crab pigout - $42 a person Came with sides : rice and beans, french fries and steamed veggies (they kept it coming 1 sweetened ice tea - I liked it. 1 key lime pie: After stuffing our face with approximately 8 plates of stone crab, we pushed on for the key lime. It was worth it! Bill: $117 including tip and all....:) Quite a bit for two people I must say! The stone crab was...on and off. On as in fresh for the first 2 plates...then it was strangely warm (not chilled or cold) I thought there was a smell, like a freezer smell...but my boyfriend thought otherwise. It could be that I have acute sense of smell though. Then the bartender/ waitress realized we were there to make it worth it so he brought out fresh, chilled and 'non-smelly' ones for us! So I kept on going... The key lime pie was worth the calories, for sure! :) Definite must-try! Would I go back...maybe, but I must make sure the stone crabs are definitely chilled and not smelly! Tip-bits: Call about the stone crabs prior to going, they are seasonal!

I like how the map shows this place as being off some bizarre access road or something. Travelers, the place is in the middle of the damn highway. There is no access road - it's just in the middle of a split highway. My friend showed me the menu for this place before I got to Florida, so I could give it a thumbs up or thumbs down kind of response, and everything sounded AMAZING. And it is. And it's pretty much as simple as that. AND the whole "all you can eat crab legs" deal is one of the best things in this world.

We ordered mahi mahi grilled for my husband and lobster tail for me. And a clam chowder to share. Everything tasted good without me wanting to rave on about it and say it was amaaaaaazing. Seafood was fresh for sure. I thought for such a casual joint that doesn't serve imaginative food (all the entrees just came with standard baked potato, fries and salad etc), the prices were a bit high.

Why does Ballyhoo's have a picture of a yellow tail on their sign? That was my first warning. This place is not worth going to. Yawn.

  • Gretchen T.

Hearty portions of fresh, delicious fare, decent wine considering you're in FL, and friendly service. Higher end for Key Largo in terms of price, but a good choice of you're starving (after a dive, for example) and don't want to risk a local joint that could just be a greasy spoon.

I think this place deserves more credit than it's gotten in the other reviews, but maybe we were fortunate to get all-we-can-eat stone crabs and key lime pie, both of which were great. He went for the stone crabs both times. I did the fish sandwich special - the one wedged between a grilled cheese on wheat apparently - the first time and was disappointed. I had a jerk fish sandwich the second round, which was better. The highlights though were definitely the crab, the chowder - which was great too - and the key lime pie.

So far so good Terri our server really set the tone. The wife ordered an expresso martini and I ordered the swamp ape an IPA. We started with the key lime pie. I ordered snow crab legs and she ordered the scallops with sautéed spinach. The soup was seafood gumbo that we picked. Well put together. Salad was vibrant and fresh. The key lime pie was really good. perry much everything was on point.

Let me start this off by saying I HATE leaving negative reports but I thought all my fellow yelpers should know. I went two nights ago and ordered the seafood Alfredo. We also ordered the fried chicken & snapper. All the food was bland and not great. It was very expensive so we went expecting to have great food. ($28 dollar meals) The service was very slow and it took a while to get refills. Overall it wasn't great, not even good. I wouldn't return here. For what it cost to eat here I'll eat somewhere better in the keys.

  • Kiley K.

This place was baaaaangin'. Seems to be a local fave as we saw some regulars sucking on those crab legs like they were getting paid. F'ing super beer list. Then they came with some pretzel rolls and teeny biscuits. Grilled avocado app had me like MMMM YES. Quality. Entrees, y'all: had a Yellowtail Lorenzo special wearing a crab cake as a hat. Do not sleep on their crab cakes. THEY HUGE AND CRABBY. No fillas - all crab. I know that sweet potato fries be kinda a weak choice as a side on my part, but they was good and also plentiful. Catsup was homemade maybe? Mans had the Cast Iron Mahi - he said: very enjoyable. Server Terry was mega awesome. Left hella full and content. Imma destroy that to-go key lime pie in the hotel bed later.

  • Linda O.

Although I didn't see any roaches, it was still just a "eh so so" experience. Crab legs were good (snow crab) but it's hard to screw that up, fried pink tomato app was good, conch chowder good, Hemingway (encrusted yellowtail snapper with crab meat on top) also good. Nothing better than good. We ordered key lime pie for dessert. It had meringue on top And resting on strawberry sauce ... Huh ??! But filling was good. So if you want nothing really out of the ordinary, except unnecessarily jazzed up key lime pie, and good is good enough - this is your place

Amazing little find on Key Largo! All homemade meals of local fare. Jalapeño jelly tangy and superb over warm buscuits and pretzels. White Sangria with a hint of cinnamon, yummy and refreshing. Churrasco, one of the best we've ever had, especially the fresh, delicious chimichuri. Lobster with perfect seasoning. Southern style fried chicken Cobb salad with unique and delicious Gorgonzola dressing made on site. Extensive vegan vegetarian fare to boot. All topped with the BEST key lime pie in the keys! Thank you, Biancca for the great service!

We went here for the all you can eat crab legs and when we came it turned out to be $40 which was a little too much than why we were wanting to spend. Instead I ordered off the 3 course meal menu, I got the bayou pasta with gumbo and mango creme brûlée ($21). It was definitely more than I could eat and the best bang for my buck! They also had a bunch of stuff made in house like the bread and ketchup. Over all it was really good but a bit expensive for the food I thought.

All you can eat snow crabs left me feeling like I ate too much! That's how it should be. The food was really good. They have a great salad dressing with gorgonzola and grilled onions. My husband got a righteous burger cooked perfectly. My DAD got the all you can eat stone crabs and got his money worth. We waited maybe an hour for a table, so plan ahead.

I ordered Jerk Fish on wheat with black eyes peas and roasted shrooms! WOW! It was sooooo delicious! Ohh and they even brought me fresh beer bread with 2 different homemade jams to try! Since diabetic / lactose intolerant / can't eat beef / pork among other things, I'm not the easiest customer at times. These guys made it a point to help me pick the perfect meal or my needs! The service was awesome! 10x better than most Keys joints. Eat here! Thanks guys! You rock!

This place has amazing food. It may take a few extra minutes to get the food, but that is because they make it all from scratch. The menu is unique and good for everybody: vegan, vegetarian, or carnivore. :-) the fried chicken is amazing. Made my southern boyfriend proud. Get the boiled peanuts and enjoy the best food I have had in the Keys so far.

I'm giving this place 1 star because unfortunately there's not a 0 star option. I am sitting as at the table as I write this review. Service has been beyond horrible!!!! Our appetizer never came after approximately 1/2 hr at the table, once the food came, quality is non existent. My sons pizza is a poor version of a frozen one you can buy at the store. Mac n cheese has no flavor whatsoever. The only decent item was the drinks. The waitress, Wanda, avoid her at all costs. Completely unapologetic and careless. The other waitress was kind enough to offer an apology and a discount as well. This will be our last time at this establishment!!!!

The po boy was great. My wife and sister in law really like the jerk fish. My brother in law raved about Hemingway yellowtail. Service was really good too

Honestly for the price I was expecting something a little bit better. The service was really slow even though there were only two couples in the entire shop, including us. The yellowtail with stuffed crab was delicious but the sautéed spinach was actually bitter. I did not like that at all. Also the cheese biscuits were undercooked. My boyfriend got the small cast iron mahi mahi which was more sauce than mahi, and black beans over white rice for the side, which had minute ready rice and seasonless beans. The other good thing it had was the key lime pie which was actually pretty good but I don't think I would pay $8 again for it, in the future. Overall our bill came back to about $40 per person. For that reason I'd rather dine somewhere else with higher quality food and better service. I can't honestly say that I will be returning here.

We were looking for a fun, tasty "Hole in the Wall" restaurant and Ballyhoo's definitely hit the mark! Their bread was really tasty and unique: pretzel bread w/ butter and tasty mini-biscuits with pepper jelly. Then came the salads - I got a wedge salad and my wife got the house salad. The lettuce and tomatoes tasted fresh and the onion Gorgonzola dressing was delicious! The main course was great and there was plenty of it. My wife got the Pasta Bayou (Cajun chicken in pasta with Alfredo sauce) - she couldn't finish it! I got the prime rib special (available on Wednesdays) with hand cut French fries. Really great flavor and a lot of food. The ketchup even tasted homemade! My wife got the Key Lime Pie and I got the pumpkin Crete brûlée (it was like a comfort food) - we both thought they were tasty. We will be back!

I had high hopes for Ballyhoo's but was sadly disappointed. Arriving on a Sunday evening of a holiday weekend, we were ready for a delicious keys type dinner. Upon entering we were advised that they were out of stone crabs and yellowtail. I asked if there was a special fish to which staff replied "mahi mahi." Not so special if you ask me. So after calling a couple other places we figured out most didn't have stone crab so we decided to stay. Our server was very friendly, but we couldn't help but feel jipped when she informed us they were also out of sparkling wine and most of the beers on their list. At this point it's becoming laughable - and obvious that the place is poorly managed. So we order a pound of the king crab legs with a side of what was supposed to be blue cheese Mac & cheese. I couldn't find any cheese at all in there, much less of the advertised pungent variety we hoped for. Tasted like boiled dry pasta with butter topped with store bought bread crumbs. The crab legs were delicious and cooked correctly so we tore those up! Unfortunately it had also taken way too long to get our food and our server had waited a good 10 minutes after we ordered before bringing us our bread basket, but I enjoyed the savory cheese biscuits and pretzel breadsticks none the less. Atmosphere outside was nice (not on the water) but on the inside it's less than charming. I really wanted to like Ballyhoo's but it seems like management is checked out. I don't intend to return but best of luck... There's potential here.

They accommodated our large dinner party, which is very rare at the mom and pops customary at the keys. The gumbo was the best Ive had outside Nola. The fried pink tomatoes were very good. The Scallops from the Classics menu were a great choice. If you like key lime pie...try it! Overall it was a good choice for a large party. Make reservations ahead if you are able to.

I thought this place was ok. Somewhat overpriced and not as great. I ordered the king crab legs, which were pretty large, but they were not amazing. Edible, but not worth the prize. The waiter was really friendly and overall very efficient.

Hubs and I ate dinner here on a Sunday night during our vacation in Key Largo. They let us know before we were seated that they were out of stone crab which I thought was great customer service. At least they let us know before we sat down and ordered it. To start, the waiter brought some soft pretzel bread and some soft delicious biscuits that I thought tasted like focaccia bread. It came with some yummy jalapeño jelly. I'm a sucker for sweet and spicy. I ordered sweet tea to drink and it was the real deal! I love me some fresh brewed southern sweet tea. Yum! Since I was born in Florida but now live on the other side of the country, I decided to go nostalgic and ordered some boiled peanuts for an appetizer. They were Cajun flavored but with none of the yummy saltiness I remembered from my childhood. For the main course, I ordered the AYCE snow crab for $35. Hubby ordered the ribeye which was flavorful and cooked medium the way he likes it. We were both very happy with our entrées. I think I ate my body weight in crab haha. I have now been dubbed Crab Slayer. TL;DR: Eat here! It's delicious. Signed, Crab Slayer

What a great find! Some of my local friends who live here recommend this place for seafood. A local recommendation is always a good one. We ate on the patio for the sunset. It was cute and clean. Excellent drink menu! They had gluten free pear cider for the woman, and a pint sized bottle of beer for me! I even drank it gangsta style straight of of bottle. Lol My friend and I ordered all you can eat King Crab. My woman ordered the garlic lobster. The Lobster tail was some of the tastiest lobster I've EVER had. Why 4 stars instead of 5? The crab was so slow to come out we actually thought that they thought we needed to go. Granted, together we had eaten over 8 lbs by that point. We made they lost money on the "All you can eat" venture for sure. The sides were awesome, and service outside was very good. We will definitely return!

As a vegan, I probably wouldn't have stopped at a seafood place, but this restaurant was great. I can't comment on the regular menu options, but there's a separate vegan/vegetarian menu. Over a couple of visits, we tried the black bean and sweet potato burgers, vegan grilled cheese sandwich, black bean tacos, boiled peanuts, and coconut cake. Everything was very tasty, and the waitstaff were very clear that the boiled peanuts and vegan grilled cheese were a little different from your usual peanuts and cheese. For the peanuts, our waitress explained how they were made, and even offered us a nice-sized sample to try. They were great - soft and tender like a cooked chickpea or black bean. If you go on a nice day, definitely sit outside under the tree. Also, try the homemade lemon and limeades! Very tasty.

  • Matthew G.

If you are looking for vegetarian or vegan food in the Keys, this is your place! Ask for the separate menu, which has some great options, especially for a sea food restaurant. Most everything is homemade, allowing the quality and flavors to be above and beyond what you will find elsewhere. The portions are also large and satisfying, without being obnoxious Man vs. Food sized. I especially recommend anything on the beer bread and the pepper jelly. Only issue was our salad was pretty well soaked in dressing; ask for it on the side.

I've eaten at Ballyhoo's in the past and it was always fresh and reasonably priced. Stopped in there last week and they've changed the menu to a more "$20 fish sandwich place." Not fitting to their poor location between north and south bound US1 traffic... Regardless, we sat and waited for our server for 10-15 mins and still no service. No water, no drinks more importantly, and therefore NO LONGER a customer of theirs. Service= Poor Location= Noisy (off water) Food= OVERPRICED RESULT= Keep driving to the next restaurant.

The service was great! We got the burgers, nice fresh ground beef. They were delicious and huge. We did not have any rom for dessert. We will definitely eat here again.

Food was good but service was OK. We had all you can eat Stone Crab and King Crab. After they remodeled the bathroom from a "girls" and "guys" to a "unisex", I'm pretty grossed out. As a woman I don't care to use a restroom with a urinal next to me, YUCK.

Cooked oysters, great. Served warm pretzels with jalapeño jelly. Fantastic. Yellowtail Hemingway was delicious....key lime/parmesan/garlic butter sauce. Cooked perfectly and moist. Key lime pie was the best I've ever had. Our waiter Wes was attentive and very kind. Highly recommend.

Contrary to popular belief, when asked where the best seafood is on Key Largo locals should answer "Ballyhoo's" but few do. After four nights on the island and speaking with an endless number of locals in the hospitality and recreational industry, I think I've figured out why they often mention The Fish House or Bayside instead. Ballyhoo's is a little bit more expensive than others and many of the locals go to places that are less pricey, which is why you don't hear Ballyhoo's or Conch House as often as you should. Meanwhile, the $5 more, per meal, you'll spend here, brings the flavor and quality of local seafood to a new level. Sure, competitors do a nice job at bringing local seafood to tourists. However, without a trip to Ballyhoo's you don't get the full experience: excellent service, presentation, wonderful sauces, true, non canned sides and wonderful dessert. A trip here is a true experience which would be worth a visit. Their conch chowder was thicker than the other places on the island (Fish House and Conch House) but blended an assortment of spices, veggies and, of course, conch. It was awesome. As for the main dishes, we grabbed two: The Yellowtail Hemmingway and Caribbean Pan Fried Scallops, both of which were darn good and more than filling. I think they gave me the entire yellowtail. These dishes define the island experience, one that isn't complete without it. But, don't leave without dessert. Their key lime pie is exceptional and the chocolate pecan pie couldn't have done a better job at providing to us this was the premier destination on the island, although the Conch House isn't far behind.

Judging by all the great reviews I'm convinced our experience was just bad timing. Monday morning, under staffed, even though there were only 10 people total in the place. Food took an hour and was mediocre at best. Jerked fish sandwich was a touch bland, Mac and cheese has potential after salt and pepper. Ordered chicken tenders but it turned out to be a sandwich with very little chicken (i think it was chicken). Will not be returning...

The service is freindly and food is always very good here. The appetizers and main courses and sides are all very well done and very tasty. Desserts are also very good. When the stone crabs are in season and you order all-you-can-eat, it's worth every penny! They are fresh and they keep on coming until you ask for them to stop. Unlike other places where the server leaves the state between servings, you will be filled to capacity!

  • Craig D.

We stumbled across this place while looking for a dinner spot. I will start by saying that the service was excellent. Our server was knowledgable and polite and answered all of our questions. Now on to the food. I can't remember what my wife ordered but she didn't like it at all. She ate it because she was hungry though. I ordered the fried chicken. It was served hot and crispy but lacking any flavor. I thought the prices were high for what we got. $18 for 4 pieces of chicken? Our bill , including tip was over $50 and we left wanting to go back to our hotel and order a pizza. Sad about the food because the service was awesome!

Couldn't believe my eyes when saw their vegan menu!!! I almost fall from my chair. Ballyhoo's had me at hello, no doubt about it. Suddenly The Keys were eco-friendly, vegan healthy. But don't take me wrong, this is not a vegan restaurant... they just have an optional vegan menu because the owner is vegan. Sweet. I opted for the sweet potato burger with fries. Great flavors but too heavy, I must say. I wanted to try the black bean burger, but the ingredients were too spicy. For dessert, I had the vegan coconut cake, a humongous portion, perfect for two. My non-vegan friend had the fish sandwich, also with fries. It was good according to the empty, super clean plate an hour later. We also order their emblematic key lime pie, because if you come to this historic restaurant, it's a must. Flavors were bold, definitely a crowd pleaser. Expect to spend some money here, not your average eatery, that's for sure. But the vegan menu well deserve the high check.

This was my favorite meal during our vacation! We had great service and both me and my husband thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Our waitress brought out a jalapeño jam that was so delicious we bought a jar to take home with us. Our entrees were large portions. He had he yellowtail and I had the chicken. We finished with a slice of key lime pie. I didn't care much for the meringue, but after I pushed it off, I was in heaven. The pie was extra tart and had great crust. My only complaint was the Mac n Cheese was a bit bland, but salt and pepper fixed that!

came here for the ayce stone crab legs and boy was that a treat. coming here as a tourist I was brainwashed into believing the only place and the best place to get stone crabs, was a joes stone crabs. After further research i stumbled upon this quaint little restaurant, and boy what an incredible place this was. 35 dollars for ayce crab legs, come here hungry cause you can not only were these stone crabs delicious, they were a bargin compared to what I paid for at joes. the decor is very homely, but they have an absolutely gorgeous outside patio that truly very well decorated. would definitely recommend coming here

Great atmosphere. The menu is very creative. They even have a vegan and vegetarian menu. I had the Joe vs The Volcano salad (minus tomatoes) was great. Wish it had less dressing on it. Sometimes less is more. Service was great.

First time in the Keys and first visit here. I had the stuffed crab mushrooms as an appetizer and they were loaded with crab...delicious! As ordered the snow crab for my main course and it was very good as well. Good service and friendly staff.

  • Vanessa M.

Everything was exceptionally fresh and delicious! We had the fried pink tomatoes, joe vs. The volcano salad, and the yellowtail snapper special. All were out of this world! A must go if in key largo or driving through.

  • Donna B.

Oh my, the fried pink tomato appetizer is awesome!! The sweetness of the pink tomato was a pleasant change from the traditional green tomatoes and the goat cheese, balsamic reduction, and basil topping made it perfect. I'm not a seafood eater, so I had the ribeye as my entrée and the house cut fries with bacon salt. The steak was fabulous too but I'm coming back for more tomatoes and bacon salt fries!!!

Amazing food!!! The last few times I've been to Key Largo couldn't leave without eating at this quaint little hidden gem! From the homemade bread with delicious home made Jalapeño jelly to the mushroom stuffed with crab and churrasco with side of AAMAZING sweet potatoe casserole, this place is definitely an A+ on my list. Their red Sangria was amazing as well. Looking forward to coming back.

This place was amazing! If you're ever in the area, this is a must go place. The service was excellent with our waitress, Jamie. I order all you can eat snow crab and they were nothing short of amazing! Very fresh and cooked to order. They come with your choice of side and I chose the fresh cut, bacon salted fries with in house made ketchup. I'm strictly a Hinez ketchup person and it was very delicious. My boyfriend ordered Churassa Steak with black beans and rice. He loved it so much he completely cleaned his plate! Its a bit pricey but definitely worth every penny spent!

$35 for AYCE Snow Crab $70 for AYCE King Crab $75 for AYCE Stone Crab We got the snow crab and it was plentiful - they would have brought out more if we kept eating that's for sure! Such a great deal, I just wish the sides were a little better/tastier.

Went here based on reviews. What a great place to eat seafood. A little pricy but well worth it. Never had conch before and the server recommended Conch Meunière. It was fantastic. Wife ordered Yellowtail Hemingway and I ordered Matecumbe Yellowtail. We shared them and neither of us could pick out a favorite. They were both yellowtail but both had a completely different taste. Both were great. For dessert we split, yep you guessed it, key lime pie. It was all really good. We would return.

Enjoyable evening in a very laid back atmosphere. We all ordered salads of some type, mine was great. Shrimp, avocados, grilled mango, etc. waiter was very, very laid back! Some folks were turned off by this but it is just part of the Keys. It is kind of weird eating in the middle of a highway. Hard to explain but is one of the only places the over seas splits with stores, restaurants in the middle. My kids loved writing on the tree, long story but you sign leaves of this very large Japanese Apple tree. I would recommend but would wait until later when the traffics slows down.

Our best restaurant of the Key Largo trip. They have homemade jellies the jalapeno one was amazing. They had a good selection of local beers in a bottle. I had the lobster which was grilled to perfection. My wife (who is vegetarian) loved the black bean burger. As somebody said before, this is a great seafood restaurant with a special vegetarian menu, and excellent food to boot. Highly recommend if you are in the Key Largo area.

We came for lunch after visiting the wildlife outpost. To start we ordered scrumptious alligator bites, coconut shrimp, and a dozen succulent fresh raw oysters. All were excellent! My wife and I shared the buffalo chicken sliders, my friend ordered the burger sliders and her boyfriend ordered sloppy joe. All was delicious. My friend and I each ordered their white sangria then their red sangria. The white sangria was delicious & much tastier than the red one. All in all our experience was great and the food was delish!

  • Andra S.

The good: the food, and the service. We had the Hemingway yellowtail..which was fantastic. The batter was light and complimented the fish well. My side (the fries) were soggy and cold but my husband had the rice and beans which were good. For desert we had the carrot cake and key lime pie...both of which we recommend. The service was great...very attentive without being overbearing. THE BAD: Cleanliness and the price :( The table was sticky...but even more stickier was the price. Over $100 without alcohol!!

Simply fantastic meal... Had the fish stuffed with seafood and was out of this world. Came with rice and beans and that too, was really good. Without a doubt next time I'm in key largo, I'll be back. Nice service as well which is always appreciated.

Nice casual place. Very tasty food with a few outstanding items. Good cocktails served in mason jars (a little less ice and more booze would be appreciated) Excellent mojitos (ditto on the ice thing). The bread and jalapeno jam is amazing! Snow Crab legs are delicious. Fish is good too. Note: Stone Crab - "all you can eat" - kind of a bait and switch - it's $75 !!! The problem is the "all-you-can" eat stone crab was their signature dish but, then the price went through the roof so they don't really advertise the price anymore and you will still hear people talking about all-you-can-eat stone crab for $32 but those days are long gone.

Great vegan menu! So good we went back 2 nights in a row! Had the vegetable curry, black bean burgers, sweet potato burger, mushrooms, blackeyed peas and finished with coconut cake! Everything was delicious- the best sangria in town not to mention fabulous service and advice from Nicole!! We will be back for sure!!

First time here. Food was good but The Chicken / Sausage Gumbo had bones in it which the waitress removed from the bill. Snow crabs were good & the Mahi was a bit dry. We had Key Lime pie for dessert which was good not great mainly because the slice was set on top of a Strawberry syrup??? Can't figure why they did that???? Service was really good & her alone boosted the Star rating. All in all, a little pricey for what it is.

The vegan menu mentioned by Yelpers is what brought us here, and it will bring us back if we have the chance. The grilled avocado was delightful. We also had the fried pink tomatos, which were presented like a caprese, with goat cheese instead instead of mozzarella.

OK I'm gonna level with yall. This seafood the best, stone crabs poppin, expensive but I could eat nothin but ballyhoo seafood the rest of my days. BUT that peanut butter pie the nastiest sh*t I ever tasted. It just a pile of frozen peanut butter on top of a dry ass cookie. Gross as hell if yall love jesus take it off the menu

Very tasty stop on way thru the Keys. Cute little atmosphere with casual but inventive fare! Friendly service as well. I got Joe vs The Volcano salad with shrimp, mango and avocado which was very good. My husband got a mahi mahi and shrimp dish which also was quite good. Recommend fries with bacon salt! I also indulged in the local Islamorada beer, Sandbar Sunday.

Ohhhhh my what to say about Ballyhoo's?! Well, first off, the food itself is actually really, really good. They have amazing vegetarian options and everything was extremely tasty. Salads are huge! The sweet potato casserole side dish was like a dessert in itself! HOWEVER, Ballyhoo's is an extremely dirty and disgusting restaurant!! We were seated in the back as we were a large party and someone noticed a huge ROACH, or as they call them, "palmetto bugs," crawling up the wall next to us. These things fly, people. Anyways, my mother-in-law was quite disturbed and proceeded to stand up off the booth and move. One of the not-so-gracious waitresses decided it would be funny to name the huge roach "George" and told us not to worry about him. She seemed to be very friendly with George. I've lived in Florida (particularly S. Florida and the Keys) my entire life and while these bugs do exist, they only exist so regularly in a filthy place or if one doesn't fumigate. Ballyhoo's, if encounters with "George" are so regular, then you seriously need to call an exterminator. The workers there just merely laughed at us and moved on. GROSS. Never coming back here again.

We were staying close by and wanted a break from the afternoon heat and went in for lunch. It was quiet...seemed like an authentic "local" joint. The food was fresh, ALL home made. I had the BLT with sweet potato fries, my husband had tomato soup and a chop salad with their buttermilk fried chicken fingers. You wouldn't think of soup in the heat, but it was wonderful, comfort food - tasty with basil infused oil. The ketchup was HOMEMADE! Good service, good price, good food.

My family appreciated the vegan options they have. It's refreshing to see a place that offers some healthy options. Their home made vegan cheese is outrageous. They make a grilled cheese out of it. Everyone needs to try this dish, it's great. Oh and they have some great craft beers.

We had amassing time, even we where little hectic in beginning, our waitress didn't loos patient and she was really professional. We all had crab legs- all u can eat and they were fresh and tasty! We had our wine and cork fee was only 10$. Thank you and see u again!!

Stopped on our way home from a drive to the keys. Great food. Exceeded expectations as the place presents itself as rather modest. Had the sangria which I loved for the cinnamon. Had the churrasco salad...very pleasantly surprising. Went with the gorgonzola dressing. It was perfect. Even bought their hand soap to go. Will come back.

The food is always a hit with my family. No trip to Key Largo is complete until Ballywhoo's is visited. All you can eat stone crabs, the tuna, wedge salad is the bomb. My mouth is seriously watering thinking about it. Sitting inside is nice - but I secretly want to try the outside patio (maybe one day soon that will happen). Oh and the conch chowder is fab!

Very nice quality seafood. Went with a large group of people and everyone was very satisfied with their meal (except for the kids). My kids are picky eaters and didn't like their food. I tried my daughter's grilled cheese on beer battered bread with tomato soup and it had to be the best tasting grilled cheese I have ever eaten. Nice environment and the food is definitely worth the price. The waitress was rude and snippy at fist, but we made fun of how she was acting and she changed her mood quick and apologized saying it had been crazy busy the whole day. I will definitely go back when I am craving really good seafood.....or a really good grilled cheese and tomato soup.

They have a separate vegan/vegetarian menu on request. Why they just don't add the items to the main menu, I don't know. I was so surprised by the quality of the vegan entrees! Sweet potato/white bean panko encrusted burger, black bean burger, black bean tacos, red curry vegetables, coconut cake! It was all amazing. So glad to see these kind of vegan options in Key Largo. We visited 3 times in the 1 week we stayed there! Service was fantastic on day one, but in true Keys fashion, it was downhill from there. Guess it's always hit or miss with service. Still going back for the food, though!

This place is seriously good eats. Was so happy to find out that a historic seafood restaurant had a whole separate vegetarian / vegan menu with a strong southern slant. The half order of the salads are HUGE although the greens could have been a bit fresher. Pimento grilled cheese on homemade beer bread with homemade tomato soup drizzled with basil oil was phenominal !!!! The Arnold Palmer was great with the homemade, pulpy lemonade! Husband really liked his fish sandwich. Only shortfall was the boiled peanuts which I got to go. Didn't have the amount of spice and seasoning I like and they were also quite undercooked. Wish I remembered our lunch time servers name, she was exceptionally friendly and nice.

Where to begin? Our party was split into two tables with a wall between them. They brought our table 4 pieces (1 for each of us, silver dollar sized) of bread and forgot about the second basket we asked for. The grilled cheese and tomato soup were described by a dinner mate as the worst she has ever tasted. The prices are higher than they should be. Our waitress was in a bad mood and acted like we were an inconvenience to her evening. Would not recommend.

We could not have been more happy, full or relaxed! The best things about this slice of heaven: - greeted with a smile, friendly hello and a water with a slice of lime in a mason jar. - home made jalapeño corn muffins and pretzel bread while we reviewed the menu. (sample of hand squeezed limeade also.) - grilled haas avocado with parmesan buttermilk ranch appetizer (a must order). - jerked fish with pink tomato sandwich. - Jo's volcano salad (shrimp, mango, grilled avocado and mango, peanut, lettuce and noodles in a cilantro lime dressing) - friendly, welcoming service of Donyelle!! (She gave us great local sight seeing recommendations also.) - amazing Florida sugar hand scrub at the bathroom indoors and fun outdoor sink. - excellent outdoor patio. - to-go cup for my water with lime!

Went there our first night in the keys because the menu has vegetarian options. The food was ok, nothing exceptional, but not bad either. However, I think the place was way over priced. The waitress we had could not answer questions about the food, such as if certain menu items could be made vegan. Her typical answer was, "I am not sure". That is fine, because my fiancée would rather not have a server guess, but the waitress had to be asked if she could go check. In most restaurants the wait staff will usually offer on their own to find out if they do not already know the answer to any questions.

As a vegan, my expectations for Key Largo were not high. But I was incredibly, pleasantly surprised by Ballyhoo's. Turns out the GM of the place is vegan and pushed really hard for the special menu, which debuted in June. Clear labeling is half the battle, and the special, separate menu of vegan and vegetarian stuff made it clear which was which, and what could be modified to be vegan. Our server was patient, thoughtful, and friendly, and was very knowledgeable about what little modifications were needed to keep things vegan (no bacon salt on the green beans, etc). So to the food: -Boiled peanuts were incredible. Richly spiced, and like nothing I've ever eaten before -Large farmer's salad was pretty standard, and completely huge. House italian dressing was nice -Vegan grilled cheese & black bean soup: A pleasant surprise, we had to order it. The homemade coconut cheese was a little sweet and had a coconut flavor. Kind of runny but we really liked the sandwich. Pro tip: ask for tomato or any other accessory you want. The soup was well-spiced but nothing to write home about. -Black bean burger: This was pretty huge, on a long Cuban roll. The patty was clearly homemade, a bit dry but tasted nice. Generous avocado on it. -Pan-friend mushrooms, no butter: incredibly good and flavorful -Green beans: Perfectly cooked, just tender without being floppy -Vegan coconut cake: Not what we expected, but good. A spice cake with gooey coconut frosting. Our omnivore family loved their meals too, including crab-stuffed mushrooms, a yellowtail special, and the homemade mac and cheese. Overall a great experience, go for it!

A seafood grill with an amazing vegan/vegetarian menu. A rarity on Key Largo. So delicious! For lunch I had the Joe vs the Volcano salad, grilled mango with vermicelli noodles and spinach in a citrus chili dressing! Robin had the black bean tacos. Jalapeño corn muffins were too hard to resist, washed down with sweet tea. Eclectic interior decoration and great service makes this one of our new favorites!

Absolutely amazing! Food was delicious and Jamie, our waitress couldn't have offered us any better service. Ask for her when you visit. I don't post reviews often so please know this was a good one!

I love coming here because of the stone crabs and ambience. The stone crabs are fresh and the staff is always friendly. Today I came with some friends from up north because I told them about my past experiences but unfortunately was not today's experience. The stone crabs and snow crab legs were NOT fresh and the waitress seemed to have been bothered by the simple fact that we returned them not once but twice after she tried to get us fresh ones. The stone crabs shells were sticking to the meat and the snow crabs were gummy. Also when we returned the crabs for fresh ones she did not even consider replacing the cold side dishes. After the second return we opt for something more local. Lobster to our surprise this too was ruined. The lobster took for ever to come out and when it did it was uneatable because it was over cooked. The waitress after bringing the check disappeared. I would in recap say be careful with the freshness and indifferent treatment that you will get from the wait staff if you complain for something that you pay for. Did I mention that the lobster was half a tail and $27. It's manager never came to the table. I guess that they don't really care about their customers experiences.

AMAZING! They have something for everyone and everything is delicious. Everything was fresh and unique. I highly recommend it to anyone driving down to the Keys. Stop there on your way. You won't regret it.

We just left this place and the food is AMAZING, great sangrias and Key Lime Pie is really one of the best I have ever tried, the only thing this place is lacking is costumer service, the server we had Wes was actually great, however there were a couple of people working here who should have either more training on costumer service or find another job. There was a lady at the very beginning who instead of asking how many for lunch, she said "there is not stone crab and we only have two appetizers left" then I asked do you have lunch and she responded very sarcastic "of course we have a menu" . After finishing our delicious lunch, there was another server (not our server) who picked up a menu my son dropped on the floor , so my older son said, oh that's my little brothers and the guy very rude answered: then why he didn't pick it up?? I cant believe a grown man is talking to a kid costumer like this. I am very disappointed about this, specially when we drove all the way from Miami to come to this place.

Ouch! 4 of us ate there last week. Two of the big healthy guys got sick next morning. I would suggest to avoid this restaurant if you can. The 4 of us had good fish. BUT one of these was over cooked, and the other one was under cooked. The fish looked good and tasted fresh, the service was good, but half of us being sick should be considered...

Only Place We Could find Crab legs IN the keys. All you can eat king or snow crab cooked perfectly. Our waitress was amazing and kept them coming until we were stuffed. We were a large group so they set up a party room. I was surprised they weren't busier. Everything was great.

Really nice experience!!! I extremely recommend the yellowtail snapper. And I had the best key lime pie of my life. Friendly server, like Danielle I recommend this place for lunch.

The waiter was helpful and the food rocked. Excellent beer list. Grilled avocados and seafood scampi were very good. The wine selection was lacking but otherwise this pace is a find. Eat outside on the deck.

My God!!! What a meal. Started with the Conch Menuire as an appetizer. That could have served as my entrée and I would have floated out of the restaurant with a big smile on my face. But no, they don't let you off the hook that easily. They keep pounding you relentlessly with one great treat after another. Until you raise the white napkin of surrender. My partner, a lady with very discerning tastes, ordered the Yellowtail Hemingway (fresh, caught locally) and could not stop saying "this is so good", over and over until I was tempted to tell her to stop, except for the fact my mouth stayed compulsively full with one show stopping serving after another (stuffed mushrooms, Churrasco, sautéed spinach, and the wonderful Mac and Cheese. Plus the Key Lime Pie - and part of the profits go to saving Manatees no less). And this is not to mention the details, the details so vital to excellence, like homemade ketchup (really, when was the last time you went to a restaurant where they took the time to make their own ketchup (and it was good)? Micro brewed beers, homemade bread, home brewed rum. Good grief, the folks at this place have passion. They care. The ambiance is authentic Keys without the kitsch. I really like this place and Robert, the owner, the brains behind it all, gets an "A+". Donielle was our waitress and what an example of how it should be done. Friendly, personable, smart and knew the menu and the recipes and really put an effort to ensuring you enjoyed your meal. She even attended to our person hygiene. Nice job folks and... Thank You, Valerie and Jay

We stopped here a couple of days ago for their all-you-can eat stone crabs, but unfortunately there were none. Wholesale prices are through the roof now, so the owner hasn't purchased them in a while. But, what we ate was excellent. Great homemade fries, fresh yummy mahi tacos with beans, and delicious "Joe Vs The Volcano" - grilled shrimp, spinach noodles, grilled mango, avocado, tomato, cilantro, mint and pecans, tossed with poppy seed vinaigrette. We were so stuffed that we couldn't try any desserts. Watch for this place off the main highway near Key Largo. It's worth a stop.

Last night on our Florida vacation, and saved the best meal for last. Had the Snow Crab, and it was perfect. Daughter had Pot Roast, and said it was the best. Our waitress, Kayla was extremely friendly, attentive and informative. Definitely a must on the way to or from Key West.

Wow, only 3.5 stars for a great place and experience. OUr night here was quite the evening. Very dramatic with a happy ending. We were driving back from Key west and stoped for dinner at what ever we found. We did not know this was the oldest place in town but we got lucky. My wife ordered the 2lb stone crab as an entre. Well it took both of us over one hr to eat this. I can see the waiter was getting a little inpatient with us as we still had the main meal to go. But this was amazing. I usually do not eat crab but I was making love to it nice and easy and enjoying it like it was my woman....I never had such great crab. I ordered the yellow tail Parmeasan but when I got it I was so full from the crab I did not think I can eat it. Well I did!! That to was excellent. The time was getting late as we arrived there round 9pm and we still had to get to Ft.Lauderdale. We finally left when arriving to home 1.5 hrs later I realized I forgot my camera bag!! My heart stopped for a second there. You see I do not have regular cameras. I had about 15k of equipment in the bag!! Hard drives with all my photos and boy was I pissed with myself. On our way out of the restaurant I asked for a menu!! Just like that as I normally do not. If I had not I would not have even known the name of the place to find a number. I called right away in a frantic....Luckly the manager Randy was there and asked if anyone had given him a bag which in turn he said no!! OMG!!! Please go check our table as he remembered me. Believe it or not it was still where I left it tucked under the table where no one can see it!! Randy was so nice he took it home for me and safe guarded it. The very next morning I drove there like a nut case to Randy's home. There was my bag!!! I was so happy I gave him $100 tip. He told me he works for tips and will accept!! Worth every penny... He told me thats a big tip for a camera. He's just doing his job. My respond was it's my life. I love photography...... Thanx again Randy.. it shows that there are good people out there. Good will come to you too.....Karma

Went here 2 years ago and had a great all you can eat crab leg meal. Service was outstanding, food great and prices reasonable so naturally my wife and I wanted to return. We went back this year in June and what a difference. Food overpriced, $35 for AYCE snow crab and $70 for the king crab. Sides were just ok, service not good at all and the food was just so-so. Would not go back due to the experience we had this time, very sad. If you choose to go just think you're rolling the dice. Good luck

We stopped here for lunch on a Tuesday headed home from Key West. We were the only patrons. I ordered the fish sandwich special. Incredible. Blackened mahi on roll with two fried tomatoes lettuce , etc. with a remaloude sauce that was great. My husband ordered a bowl of seafood bisque. Very tasty. Service was good

Finding seafood in the Florida Keys is as easy as finding land crabs on a walk through the hammocks. Finding great seafood is like finding a land crab still outside his hole when you approach closely. Okay, I'll work on that one, but I'll do that while sharing a healthy potion of the best Key Lme Pie we sampled during our several days in the Keys. Made with condensed milk and just right limey, just right tangy, it comes topped with a golden, tasty meringue with expertly-browned little wavey tips, and was finished with a light drizzle of lime juice. Our meal consisted of shared appetizers and an entree, all the better to sample the ample menu. Our chargrilled Oysters Rockefeller were smallish and tasty, and we relished the juices as we soaked them up with a soft, crispy-crusted french bread. Alongside the oysters was a just-right Grilled Avacado, with a dipping sauce based on mayonaise that reminded me of a very light, only slightly tangy hollandaise. Yummy! The entree consisted of a panko-crusted Yellowtail Snapper that seemed to be infused with a light but tasty lemon butter, accompanied by a Sauteed Spinach that had been prepared in olive oil (only) and melted in your mouth. Topping off this culinary menage a trois was a very reasonable price and a thoroughly engaging conversation with our waiter, Stephen, about the history of the restaurant and the Keys, with an emphasis on the railroad construction that made it all possible. I give Ballyhoo's 5 stars because there was really nothing about the establishment, the atmosphere, the food, the prices or the wait staff that we did not find first rate.

Oh my oh my what a memorable piece of key lime pie. Grilled avocados are an amazing appetizer. Four pieces of grilled avocado topped with a special butter. Great vegan and New Orleans feeling. Came here last summer after spending the day in marathon snorkeling and came upon this place as we were driving back up and had the most amazing piece of key lime pie.., stopped here again for key lime pie. This place makes the best key lime pie that I have ever had.

This place was great. Everything was home made and that is so special to me. The jalepeno cornbread is amazing. I had the homemade chicken tenders which were tasty. The fries were ok, I really like the homemade ketchup. My husband had the yellowtail snapper and couldn't get enough of it. Our waitress was very nice and quick. I loved how it is in a very old house.

Awful service. We just left...they said they were short staffed which I can understand but took 20 minutes to get a drink and the bartender didn't have a clue. My wife sent her drink back...asked for a margarita and got some orange flavored I don't know what. Asked for a rum and coke instead and got some flat soda and off brand rum. I have a feeling it wasn't going to get better and we left for greener pastures...
